Accra – The prime suspect in the murder of Assistant Inspector Stephen King Amoah of the Ghana Immigration Service is expected to reappear before the Adabraka District Court on August 8, 2025.

At a media briefing in Accra, the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), COP Lydia Donkor, outlined how investigative leads and forensic evidence led police to arrest Bright Aweh, also known as “Roberts” or “Highest Bright.”

According to COP Donkor, the Kwabenya District Police Command received a missing person’s report on July 4, 2025, concerning Assistant Inspector Amoah, who was stationed at the Sports Department of the Immigration Service Headquarters in Accra.

Investigations revealed that on the evening of July 3, 2025, at about 8:00 p.m., the officer left his Ashongman Estate residence after receiving WhatsApp images of bundles of cash from Aweh, who had invited him to settle an outstanding debt. Amoah did not return home, and his phone remained switched off thereafter.

On July 6, police arrested Aweh, who admitted meeting the deceased that night and handing him GHS 500,000. He claimed to have instructed Amoah to use GHS 200,000 to clear certain debts and to hold the remaining GHS 300,000 for later collection. However, Aweh gave conflicting accounts regarding the source of the funds, raising suspicions. He was arraigned before the Kwabenya Circuit Court on July 8 on a provisional kidnapping charge.

The case took a grim turn the following morning, July 9, when police discovered a severely burnt body in a gutter near GBC Satellite, opposite Comet Estate in Accra. The remains were transferred to the Police Hospital morgue, where relatives—despite the extensive burns—positively identified the deceased as Amoah.

On July 16, CID operatives, supported by the Counter-Terrorism Unit and Kwabenya Police, searched Aweh’s residence. Forensic teams found bloodstains in the living room, evidence of attempted clean-up, freshly sprayed white walls, and an empty spray paint can.

A related crime scene near the GBC Satellite area yielded further evidence, including a burnt, blood-stained woolen carpet and partially burnt camouflage fabric. These items were documented and secured for forensic analysis.

Subsequent searches on July 24, authorised by court warrant, uncovered additional bloodstains in a room at Aweh’s house, as well as a fufu pestle with visible blood traces found in nearby bushes. Police also impounded the suspect’s vehicle, where more bloodstains were detected.

Initial forensic tests confirmed that the blood samples were human. DNA profiling is underway, with the deceased’s mother and son providing reference samples.

In light of the evidence, Aweh has been re-arrested and formally charged with murder. He remains in custody pending his next court appearance on August 8.

COP Donkor said a special operation is ongoing to trace and apprehend possible accomplices, with investigators pursuing “other vital leads” to ensure all involved are brought to justice.

“The Ghana Police Service wishes to assure the public that the investigation is ongoing, and every effort is being made to ensure all perpetrators are held accountable,” she added.
