Today, I would like to shine a spotlight on a Nigerian association in Ghana, an association that grew from very humble beginnings within the Ashongman Estate area in the Ga East District, Oganiru Brothers Association which is currently under the leadership of President Amarachi Okoronkwo.

OGANIRU BROTHERS: The NIGERIAN ASSOCIATION Setting a NATIONAL Standard in GHANA

As a young man in my late teens, sometime around 2008 or 2009, I remember when a few men came together to create a group primarily for welfare purposes.

I would often observe them sitting behind the John & Joy Nigerian Bar in the evenings, discussing matters, and then sharing food and drinks before dispersing. These were all Igbo men who lived and worked in Ghana. For the sake of community, security, and protection against the unforeseen challenges that can arise when living in a foreign country, it made sense to create such an organization.

From the time Oganiru Brothers Association was formed until I eventually decided to become a bona fide member, the association has gone through numerous reforms and leadership transitions. I personally joined Oganiru Brothers Association in the latter part of 2017, with Mr. Chidi Banabas serving as my guarantor, during the closing period of the leadership tenure of the now Honorable Damian Chima, the 4th President of the Association.

From that time until now, in 2026, there have been many ups and downs. From the COVID-19 global lockdown, which affected Ghana, to the economic hardships and superinflation of the following years, Oganiru Brothers Association has endured and prevailed. This post is simply to give the association its flowers.

As an Igbo man and a resident of Ghana, I have seen many similar groups and associations formed, only for them to end in conflict, division, or disillusionment. Yet Oganiru Brothers Association has endured. The question is: why? What have they done right that others can learn from?

WHY OGANIRU HAS PROSPERED

The association has successfully evolved its rules and regulations to suit the changing social dynamics of the society in which it operates.

A good example of this was the decision to formally register the association in both Ghana and Nigeria, transforming what was once an undocumented organization into a legally recognized body. This gave the association the authority to take legal action when necessary and advocate for its members within recognized legal frameworks. This move provided Oganiru Brothers Association with a level of protection and credibility that many members may not fully appreciate at the moment.

The association has also made deliberate efforts to establish relationships with the Nigerian High Commission in Ghana and with local traditional authorities, further strengthening its ability to protect and represent its members when the need arises.

Oganiru Brothers Association also operates an in-house savings and loans scheme, providing members not only with welfare support but also with access to loans for business ventures and medical emergencies. Very few self-funded associations can boast of such an achievement.

Another reason Oganiru has prospered is that it embraces progressive thinkers while naturally filtering out regressive mindsets. Many of the advances Oganiru has made would not have been possible in an organization where the dominant attitude is simply, “No, we can’t.”

The association has also consistently rejected the culture of sacred cows. Within meeting sessions, all members are treated equally, from the wealthiest and most influential to the least privileged. This does not mean the association is entirely free from sycophancy, but when it comes to applying its rules, no one is above the law. Ultimately, the association’s constitution is strong enough to enforce this principle because diverse opinions and healthy debate have always existed within the house.

A sixth reason for Oganiru’s success is its ability to maintain continuity across different administrations. Many associations rise and fall depending on who occupies leadership positions, with each new administration discarding the achievements of the previous one. Oganiru, however, has generally managed to preserve institutional memory and build upon the foundations laid by former leaders. This culture of continuity has allowed projects, policies, and reforms to mature over time rather than being abandoned midway through implementation.

Oganiru has also made many strides in cleaning the image of Nigerians in the nation of Ghana by taking active steps in combating sex trafficking victims. This has given Oganiru Brothers an unparalleled authenticity in the eyes of the law, particularly with the immigration office and the police.

I could go on and on, but these seven factors alone create multiple conditions that encourage growth, resilience, and long-term sustainability.

Is Oganiru Brothers Association a flawless organization? I do not think so.

There is still much that can be improved upon. In fact, the association may be especially vulnerable at this point in its history because, unlike any other time in the past, Oganiru Brothers Association has experienced a significant increase in its appeal and membership.

Many prominent and affluent individuals will naturally be drawn to the association. Some will come because they genuinely wish to contribute and be part of its success. Others may come simply to share in its glory, while some may seek to take advantage of that success for personal gain.

As long as Oganiru Brothers Association continues to walk the path that has brought it this far, I believe the sky is the limit. However, if we drift toward becoming an arena where politics, personal agendas, and power struggles take precedence over mutual growth, brotherhood, and welfare, I fear that even with all our progress and achievements, we may eventually find ourselves stagnating.

This is my tribute to a brotherhood and an association that has largely gotten things right and continues to do so. I wish Oganiru Brothers Association continued growth, prosperity, and happiness.

And, as our slogan says, “Oganiru, Otuobi,” meaning “Progress and Unity,” I pray that this will always remain our reality.

If you are an Igbo man from Imo State living in Ghana and wish to join your brothers in fraternity, progress, and mutual support, kindly reach out to Oganiru Brothers Association on Facebook. Complete the vetting process, and you may have the opportunity to become part of this remarkable journey.
